Though inspired by the 1979 comedy, screenwriters Nat Mauldin and Ed Solomon wisely opted to take the premise chaos ensues when two fathers-in-law from completely different walks of life meet and run with it, rather than attempting a scene-for-scene remake. They jettisoned some of the best-known bits â?? the neglected dental patient, the evasive-action gag that made "Serpentine, Shelley, serpentine!" a catchphrase and an anecdote involving babies abducted by giant tse-tse flies and added new jokes, more action and thongs. Divorced, James Bond-style CIA agent Steve Tobias (Michael Douglas) is good at saving the world but bad at family functions; he's missed pretty much every major milestone in the life of his son, Mark (Ryan Reynolds).

The In-Laws is the 2003 remake of the 1979 film of the same name that starred Peter Falk and Alan Arkin. In the remake, Albert Brooks stars as a mild-mannered foot doctor who discovers that the father of his future son-in-law (Michael Douglas) actually works for the CIA.

'The In-Laws' is an accomplished but not inspired remake of a 1979 comedy which was inspired and so did not need to be accomplished. The earlier movie was slapdash and at times seemed to be making itself up as it went along, but it had big laughs and a kind of lunacy. The remake knows the moves but lacks the recklessness.
