The film was produced by Bernd Eichinger and Dieter Giessler and directed and co-written by Wolfgang Petersen (his first English-language film) and starred Barret Oliver, Noah Hathaway, Tami Stronach, Moses Gunn, Thomas Hill; and Alan Oppenheimer as the voices of both Falkor and Gmork. At the time of its release, it was the most expensive film produced outside the USA or the USSR. The film was later followed by two sequels.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is a 1984 Japanese animated post-apocalyptic fantasy adventure epic film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, based on his own 1982 manga of the same name. Isao Takahata produced the film for Tokuma Shoten and Hakuhodo, with Top Craft animating. Joe Hisaishi composed the film's musical score. Maria's Lovers is a 1984 drama film directed by Andrei Konchalovsky and starring Nastassja Kinski, John Savage, and Robert Mitchum. The plot follows a soldier returning from World War II who marries the woman of his dreams, but he is unable to consummate his marriage ruining the couples chances of a shared happiness.

The film was also selected as the Colombian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 57th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.

The Man from Majorca (Swedish: Mannen från Mallorca) is a 1984 Swedish film directed by Bo Widerberg. The film is based on the novel Grisfesten by Leif G. W. Persson. The novel has big similarities with the Geijer affair (a rumor that the Swedish minister of justice had been with prostitutes, that the Swedish police had knowledge of it and had informed the prime minister). Leif G.W. Persson lost his job at the police because talking to a journalist about his knowledge about the Geijer case, but denied in the preface of the book (Grisfesten) which he wrote soon after, that it had any connections to the affair. Sven Wollter won the award for Best Actor at the 20th Guldbagge Awards.

Lassiter, also known as The Magnificent Thief, is a 1984 adventure film. Part caper and part espionage, it was set in 1930s London, and starred Tom Selleck and Jane Seymour. The movie was made to cash in on Selleck's popularity as the character Thomas Magnum in the show Magnum, P.I., but it failed to ignite the box-office on its release. Ngor as Pran, Julian Sands as Jon Swain, and John Malkovich as Al Rockoff. The Jesse Owens Story is a 1984 American biographical film about the black athlete Jesse Owens. Dorian Harewood plays the Olympic gold-winning athlete. The drama won a 1985 Primetime Emmy Award and was nominated for two more.

Gremlins is a 1984 American comedy horror film directed by Joe Dante and released by Warner Bros. The film is about a young man who receives a strange creature called a mogwai as a pet, which then spawns other creatures who transform into small, destructive, evil monsters. This story was continued with a sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, released in 1990. Unlike the lighter sequel, Gremlins opts for more black comedy, balanced against a Christmastime setting. Both films were the center of large merchandising campaigns.

Give My Regards to Broad Street is a 1984 British musical drama film directed by Peter Webb and starring Paul McCartney, Bryan Brown and Ringo Starr. The film was not financially successful, but its soundtrack album sold well. It was one of the last film appearances of classical actor Sir Ralph Richardson. The title is a take on George M. Cohan's classic show tune "Give My Regards to Broadway", making reference to London's Broad Street railway station, which closed in 1986.

Ghostbusters is a 1984 American supernatural comedy film, directed and produced by Ivan Reitman and written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. The film stars Bill Murray, Aykroyd, and Ramis as three eccentric parapsychologists in New York City who start a ghost-catching business. Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis co-star as a client and her neighbor. The Ghostbusters business booms after initial skepticism, eventually requiring a fourth Ghostbuster, played by Ernie Hudson; but, when an uptown high-rise apartment building becomes the focal point of spirit activity linked to the ancient god Gozer, it threatens to overwhelm the team and the entire world.

Garbo Talks is a 1984 American comedy-drama film directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Anne Bancroft, Ron Silver and Carrie Fisher, with a cameo appearance by Betty Comden as Greta Garbo.

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (also known as Friday the 13th Part IV or Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter) is a 1984 slasher film directed by Joseph Zito, and the fourth installment in the Friday the 13th film series. Following the events of Friday the 13th Part III, Jason Voorhees returns to Crystal Lake and continues his killing spree on a family and a group of neighboring teenagers after being revived from his mortal wound. The film stars Corey Feldman, Ted White, Kimberly Beck, and Crispin Glover.

Frankenweenie is a 1984 Tim Burton-directed short film produced with Buena Vista Distribution and co-written by Burton with Leonard Ripps. It is both a parody and homage to the 1931 film Frankenstein based on Mary Shelley's novel of the same name. 28 years later, Burton decided to work on a stop-motion 2012 remake of that film.

Formula of Love is a 1984 Soviet romantic fantasy comedy film directed by Mark Zakharov, from a screenplay by Grigori Gorin. It is loosely based on the story "Count Cagliostro" by Aleksei Tolstoy about a magician who sets out to prove humans power against the gods by fabricating love without the influence of the gods. It also follows the story lines of the woman he is trying to force to fall in love, the family with which they are staying and the stories of his servants.

Footloose is a 1984 American musical drama film directed by Herbert Ross. It tells the story of Ren McCormack (Kevin Bacon), an upbeat Chicago teen who moves to a small town in which, as a result of the efforts of a local minister (John Lithgow), dancing and rock music have been banned.

The Future of Emily (German: Flügel und Fesseln) is a 1984 West German drama film directed by Helma Sanders-Brahms. Barbara Kosta, author of Recasting Autobiography: Women's Counterfictions in Contemporary German Literature and Film, states that The Future of Emily, along with Laputa, "pursue traditional narrative patterns" compared to Germany, Pale Mother, and "lapse further into awkward melodrama." Christian Schröder, author of Hildegard Knef: Mir sollten sämtliche Wunder begegnen, wrote that the film appears "very French" and "very German" at the same time and compared it to the films of Éric Rohmer.

Flowers of Reverie (Hungarian: Szirmok, virágok, koszorúk) is a 1984 Hungarian drama film directed by László Lugossy. It was entered into the 35th Berlin International Film Festival where it won the Silver Bear - Special Jury Prize.

It tells the story of a working class boy who takes a summer job at a beach resort and learns valuable life lessons. It was the first movie to receive a PG-13 rating, although it was the fifth to be released with that rating, after Red Dawn, The Woman in Red, Dreamscape, and Dune.

Firstborn (titled Moving In in Europe) is a 1984 drama film starring Teri Garr, Peter Weller, Christopher Collet, Corey Haim (in his film debut), Sarah Jessica Parker and Robert Downey, Jr.. It was filmed in New Jersey and New York State and was finally released on DVD and Blu-ray on July 31, 2012.

Bronson plays a former assassin, who comes out of retirement to avenge the death of his journalist friend.

Children of the Corn (also known as Stephen King's Children of the Corn) is a 1984 supernatural horror film based upon the 1977 short story of the same name by Stephen King. Directed by Fritz Kiersch, the film stars Peter Horton and Linda Hamilton. Set in the fictitious rural town of Gatlin, Nebraska, the film tells the story of a malevolent entity referred to as "He Who Walks Behind The Rows" which entices the children of the town to ritually murder all the adults to ensure a successful corn harvest, and a couple driving cross-country that get caught up in it. King wrote the original draft of the screenplay, which focused more on the characters of Burt and Vicky and depicted more backstory on the uprising of the children in Gatlin; this can be seen in the 2009 adaptation. This script was disregarded in favor of George Goldsmith's screenplay, which featured more violence and a more conventional narrative structure. Filming took place mainly in Iowa, but also in California. Eight sequels have been produced.
