MMORPGs

Video game genres are used to organize video games based on their gameplay interaction rather than visual or narrative differences. A video game genre is defined by a set of gameplay challenges and are classified independent of their setting or game-world content, unlike other works of fiction such as films or books. For example, a shooter game is still a shooter game, regardless of whether it takes place in a fantasy world or in outer space.

A role-playing video game (commonly referred to as role-playing game or RPG, and in the past was also known as computer role-playing game or CRPG) is a video game genre where the player controls the actions of a main character (or several adventuring party members) immersed in some well-defined world. Many role-playing video games have origins in pen-and-paper role-playing games (such as Dungeons & Dragons) and use much of the same terminology, settings and game mechanics. Other major similarities with pen-and-paper games include developed story-telling and narrative elements, player character development, complexity, as well as replayability and immersion. The electronic medium removes the necessity for a gamemaster and increases combat resolution speed. RPGs have evolved from simple text-based console-window games into visually rich 3D experiences.

Zu Online was a massively multiplayer online role-playing game currently taking place in the fictional universe of Zu.

Zhengtu (Chinese: 征途; pinyin: Zhēng Tú) is a MMORPG developed and run by Shanghai based Zhengtu Network. The game is the most popular online game in China as of May 2008 by peak concurrent users, with a peak count of approximately 2,000,000.

Xsyon is a Sandbox MMORPG massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by the independent company, Notorious Games. Xsyon is set in an apocalyptic fantasy environment, closely modeled on the real world area of Lake Tahoe Lake Tahoe which spans the California and Nevada border, west of Carson City using US Geological Survey data. Xsyon is a persistent world crafting Sandbox game. It has been designed to have a completely player-driven economy and player-created questing system. This is unusual among MMORPGs, which often rely upon Non-Player Character vendors and quest givers to perform these functions. Xsyon can be found on many sandbox MMORPG game lists. The game world is currently both Player versus Environment (PvE) and open Player versus Player (PvP), with players being safe from other players only in the starter area (Founder's Isle) and on their own tribe land.

Wurm Online is a 3D massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by Code Club AB (formerly known as Onetoofree AB) in Motala, Sweden. Development started in 2003 by friends Markus Persson and Rolf Jansson, and it was released for personal computers in 2006. Players can choose to play on servers that allow player versus player combat and realm versus realm combat or servers that are focused more on a virtual economy.

World of Warcraft (WoW) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) created in 2004 by Blizzard Entertainment. It is the fourth released game set in the fantasy Warcraft universe, which was first introduced by Warcraft: Orcs & Humans in 1994. World of Warcraft takes place within the Warcraft world of Azeroth, approximately four years after the events at the conclusion of Blizzard's previous Warcraft release, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. Blizzard Entertainment announced World of Warcraft on September 2, 2001. The game was released on November 23, 2004, on the 10th anniversary of the Warcraft franchise.

World of the Living Dead (WoTLD) : Resurrection was a real-time zombie survival strategy browser game developed using OpenStreetMap to provide the underlying game world, with in-depth gameplay features to make a browser-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game accessible on desktop, tablet and mobile devices.

Wonderland Online is an MMORPG video game developed by Chinese Gamer International. In North America, the closed beta client was published on April 9, 2008 by Internet Gaming Gate. In China, Wonderland is also titled 飄流幻境 ("Drift Illusion").

WonderKing Online (Korean: 원더킹 Japanese: ワンダーキング) is a free-of-charge, 2D, side-scrolling massively multiplayer online role-playing game created by the South Korean company ToWinGames.

Wizard101 is an MMORPG created by KingsIsle Entertainment. Players take on the role of students of Witchcraft and Wizardry to save the Spiral, the fictional universe in which the game is played and battle enemies by casting spells using a turn-based combat system similar to collectible card games.

WildStar is a fantasy/science fiction massively multiplayer online role-playing game that takes place on the fictional planet Nexus, where a mysterious and powerful race known as the Eldan have disappeared, leaving behind a wealth of technology and secrets for players to explore.

Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade is an upcoming science fiction massively multiplayer online third-person shooter video game based on Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 setting.

OS X July 30, 2009 (Beta)

Wakfu is a tactical turn-based MMORPG developed by Ankama Games, which was released for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux on February 29, 2012. The game takes place 1,000 years after Ankama's previous game, Dofus. A spin-off game, Islands of Wakfu, was released on Xbox Live Arcade on March 30, 2011. An animated television series based on the game began airing in France from October 30, 2008. The series has also spawned various comics, a trading card game and a board game.

Vendetta Online (VO) is a twitch-based, science fiction massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by Guild Software for the operating systems Android, Linux, Mac OS X, iOS, and Microsoft Windows. It uses the NAOS game engine, a fully realtime flight model and combat system, to offer first person/third person shooter-style PvP and PvNPC battle action against the backdrop of a massively multiplayer universe. Vendetta Online shipped as a commercial MMORPG on November 1, 2004 with a subscription-based business model, although it has been running continuously since April 2002. Vendetta Online is available to play across a wide array of platforms, including the Oculus Rift virtual reality display, allowing all users to directly interact in a single, contiguous galaxy. It is also notable for its twitch combat and fidelity to real physics. It is updated regularly with new content and bugfixes.

Voyage Century Online (航海世纪/王者世紀) is a free nautical MMORPG developed by Snail Games and published by IGG. It was the first game developed by Snail after its founding in 2000. It is set in 16th-century Earth and features accurate historical representations of several coastal cities. Players are not required to choose a career path at the beginning of the game. This gives players a rather varied gameplay in which players can either specialize in one skill and trade for resources, or make use of all the skills.

Vindictus is an action MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) created by devCAT, an internal studio of Korean free-to-play game publisher Nexon. Vindictus is a prequel to the popular MMORPG Mabinogi and is known as Mabinogi Heroes (Korean: 마비노기 영웅전) in Asia.

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes was a high fantasy-themed massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) created by Sigil Games Online, and now developed and run by Sony Online Entertainment (SOE). Originally, the game was co-published by Sony Online Entertainment and the company producing it, Sigil Games Online. The game was released on January 30, 2007, with an early access date of January 26, 2007 for pre-order customers. On May 15, 2007, it was announced in a press release that Sony Online Entertainment had completed a transaction to purchase key assets of Sigil Games Online, including all rights to Vanguard.

Underlight was a fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). It was Lyra Studio's first product and launched on MPlayer.com in March 1998.

Uncharted Waters Online, originally released as Daikoukai Jidai Online (大航海時代 Online?) in Japan, is a MMORPG developed by KOEI based on the Uncharted Waters series of games. Set in the Age of Exploration, it features over a hundred different sailing ships and an open world based on real Earth geography. With a sandbox style game play and skill based character development, players interact with each other and engage in many activities such as combat, exploration, and trade on both sea and land. The game requires monthly subscription fee in Japan but the international server is free to play.

Twelve Sky 2 is a free-to-play MMORPG by ALT1

Twelve Sky, often referred to as 12 Sky, is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). It is Korean developer Alt1's first released game set in the Oriental Fantasy universe launched in its home market in 2004. Aeria Games announced Twelve Sky Closed Beta on September 5, 2007. The Closed Beta date was set to be on September 18, 2007. Twelve Sky then went into Open Beta on October 12, 2007. AeriaGames announced the closing of the game on April 6 on their forums. The game officially closed on April 30, 2010 with their item mall closing on April 13, 2010.

Trove is a Sandbox massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed and published by Trion Worlds. The game was released on Microsoft Windows on July 9, 2015.

Toontown Online was a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, developed by Disney Interactive and published by The Walt Disney Company. The beta game was released in the United States for PC on August 2001 and officially launched on June 2, 2003. Versions were released later in Japan and the United Kingdom in 2004, France and Germany in 2005, Brazil in 2006, and Southeast Asia in 2007.

Tibia is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) created by CipSoft. It is one of the oldest MMORPGs and was considered most noteworthy in its early years; however, with the development of MMORPGs, its popularity has grown much slower than other MMORPGs. It was first released in January 1997. It is a free game which is open to the public, though players have the option to pay a fee in order to upgrade to a premium account, granting special in-game benefits, including additional areas to explore, access to vocation promotions, and extra spells.

Terra (also known as Terra: 2120 or Terra: Battle for the Outland) was one of the internet's original Massively multiplayer online role-playing game, debuting in early 1996 from Kaon interactive.

TERA is a 3D fantasy themed massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by Bluehole Studio. The game was released in South Korea on January 25, 2011, in Japan on August 18, 2011, in North America on May 1, 2012, in Europe on May 3, 2012, and in Russia on February 26, 2015, with closed and open beta testings taking place before the launch dates. NHN Corporation, NHN Japan Corporation, En Masse Entertainment and Frogster Interactive Pictures publishes the game in these regions, respectively. In February 2013 the game was renamed to TERA: Rising concurrently with the game's launch to the free-to-play model.

A Tale in the Desert (ATITD) is a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG) set in Ancient Egypt, run by the independent company Pluribus Games. The initial software download and all new content are free, with a monthly subscription required to play beyond the first 24 hours.

Stellar Dawn was an upcoming browser-based sci-fi themed MMORPG under development by UK game developer Jagex.

StarQuest Online was a massively multiplayer online role playing game taking place in a large universe. It was created by Castle Thorn Software. In 2009 NeXeon Technologies partnered with Castle Thorn to support development of the game, but in mid-2014 NeXeon announced they would shut down the game server due to severe population decline.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a role-playing video game developed by BioWare and published by LucasArts. Written by Drew Karpyshyn, the soundtrack for the game was composed by Jeremy Soule. It was released for the Xbox on July 15, 2003, for Microsoft Windows on November 19, 2003, on September 7, 2004 for Mac OS X, and on May 30, 2013 for iOS iPad, which was later updated on December 19, 2013 for iPhone and iPod Touch and on the December 23, 2014 on Google Play for Android devices. The Xbox version is playable on Xbox 360 via the latter's Backward Compatibility feature.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) based in the Star Wars universe. Developed by BioWare Austin and a supplemental team at BioWare Edmonton, the game was first announced on October 21, 2008, at an invitation-only press event. The video game was released for the Microsoft Windows platform on December 20, 2011 in North America and part of Europe. Early access to the game began one week before release, on December 13, 2011, for those who had pre-ordered the game online; access opened in "waves" based on pre-order date.

Star Wars Galaxies was a Star Wars themed massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) for Microsoft Windows, developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts. Released June 26, 2003 to much critical acclaim, it spawned three expansions through 2005. The last expansion generated controversy as the game was completely overhauled, much to the dismay of many longtime subscribers. Despite these drastic changes, Star Wars Galaxies continued operation for six more years. On July 24, 2011 Sony Online Entertainment announced that the game would be closed on December 15, 2011. Despite outcry from subscribers and Star Wars fans, the servers shut down on December 15, 2011. Notwithstanding the game's closure, there are several private emulator projects in various stages of development that intend to allow users to experience Star Wars Galaxies in different incarnations of the game's existence.

Star Trek Online, often abbreviated as STO, is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by Cryptic Studios based on the popular Star Trek series created by Gene Roddenberry. The game is set in the 25th century, 30 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis. Star Trek Online is the first massively multiplayer online role-playing game within the Star Trek franchise and was released for the Microsoft Windows platform on February 2, 2010. At launch, the game required a game purchase and a recurring monthly fee. On January 17, 2012, it relaunched with a tier of free-to-play access available. After a public beta testing period, a completed version of the game was released for the Apple Macintosh platform on March 11, 2014. The game can be downloaded for Windows from the Perfect World Entertainment platform Arc Games or from Steam, or from Perfect World Entertainment as a standalone launcher for Mac. As of January 30, 2014, the game had 3.2 million players.

Spiral Knights is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game created by Three Rings Design and published by Sega. The free-to-play, Java-based game was released in 2011, and continues to be updated.

Soul of the Ultimate Nation (often abbreviated as S.U.N.) was a fantasy-based massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) produced by Webzen, a Korean-based company. It is operated in Korea by Webzen and in mainland China by The9. The game was launched in Taiwan on April 19, and in China on May 24, 2007 as a paid online service and closed on July 3, 2013.

Shot Online is a massive multiplayer online golf video game which also features character development and MMORPG elements. It is developed by the Seoul-based game developer OnNet Co. Ltd. (OnNet Korea), and published under their game portal website, GamesCampus. Although there is no subscription fee or cost to download and play the game, the game offers upgraded "Gold" membership plans for a monthly fee, and additional items may be purchased using real currency through the game's website.

Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues (abbreviated SotA) is an upcoming fantasy role-playing video game. Described as being a spiritual successor to the Ultima series, Shroud of the Avatar is primarily developed by Richard Garriott as creative director, Starr Long as executive producer, Chris Spears as lead technical designer, and Tracy Hickman as lead story designer.

Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine (Japanese: 真・女神転生IMAGINE?), formerly Megami Tensei Online Imagine (女神転生ONLINE IMAGINE?), is a free-to-play massively multiplayer online role-playing game based in the Megami Tensei universe. Aeria Games acquired the rights to the game from Cave Co., Ltd. ( contracted as simply "MegaTen".) Shin Megami Tensei is a major intellectual property of the Japanese developer and publisher, Atlus Co., Ltd. Originally released in Japan in 2007, Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online (Cave’s first massively multiplayer online (MMO) title for PC) features demon summoning and other gameplay features from the previous games in the "MegaTen" series. The game requires no subscription fee but charges for specific in-game items which are sold for real currency. On September 9, 2008 it was announced that Aeria Games & Entertainment had licensed the game for North American and European Release. Beta invitations were first sent out on December 1, 2008, and the closed beta began the same day. Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine's open beta was started as of December 30, 2008. The official game was released to North America on December 31, 2008 & was available for download via Atlus Online's website. The game can now only be played in Japanese.

Shadowbane was a free fantasy role-playing video game (MMORPG) created by Wolfpack Studios and published on March 25, 2003 by Ubisoft for Windows and Mac platforms. Originally commercial and subscription-driven, Shadowbane was launched in March 2003, and was the creation of text-MUD veterans J. Todd Coleman, James Nance, Josef Hall, Patrick Blanton and Robert Marsa and a team of 45 programmers, designers and artists. It closed on July 1, 2009.

Seal Online (씰 온라인) is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing game, originally developed by the Korean company Grigon Entertainment. In February 2007 Publisher YNK acquired the rights for the game, and in January 2009, the game was moved to the internal studio YNK Games. As of 7 February 2008, official versions of the game are available in South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, and the United States.

The Secret World is a massively multiplayer online role-playing video game set in a modern-day real world under attack from occult forces. Ragnar Tørnquist led development of the initial game for Funcom.

Sangokushi Online (三國志Online) is Koei's third online Romance of the Three Kingdoms game developed for Microsoft Windows platform. Koei announced the development of its latest MMORPG in mid-2006. Koei planned on releasing Sangokushi Online in Japan in the first quarter of 2007 followed by the rest of Asia. However Koei started the first pre-open testing on September 27, 2007. A second pre-open testing was begun on February 7, 2008. Additionally, these plans do not reference a possible North American or European release. This follows Koei's tradition of Asia-only MMO releases, such as Nobunaga's Ambition.

Salem is a Java based free-to-play MMORPG, subtitled the Crafting MMO, currently under development. The game is set in a fantastic 17th century New England featuring witchcraft and Lovecraftian creatures. This world is persistent and mutable, meaning player characters are able to make permanent changes to it by destroying and building landscape and houses etc. Gameplay in Salem is focused on all manner of crafting (farming, building, invention and so forth) and developing required character skills for doing so. It also features free-for-all PvP combat with the possibility to permanently kill player characters.

GNU/Linux

Rusty Hearts was a free-to-play MMORPG video game developed by Stairway Games and published by Windysoft in Korea, Perfect World Entertainment in North America, Sega in Japan and Xunlei Games in China.

RuneScape is a fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) released in January 2001 by Andrew and Paul Gower, and developed and published by Jagex Games Studio. It is a graphical browser game implemented on the client-side in Java or HTML5, and incorporates 3D rendering. The game has had over 200 million accounts created and is recognised by the Guinness World Records as the world's largest free MMORPG and the most-updated game.

Rohan: Blood Feud (an English-speaking version of the recently released Rohan Online) is a free-to-play massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). One week of closed beta testing in America started from March 17, 2008 by publisher YNK Interactive. It ended its one week of closed beta testing. Second round of closed beta testing ran from April 3, 2008 to April 9, 2008, the open beta was launched May 28, 2008. There are other versions of Rohan Online in Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Indonesia, and Philippines as well.

Rōblox, stylized as RŌBLOX, is a massively multiplayer online game created and marketed toward children and teenagers aged 8–18. In the game, players are able to create their own virtual world, in which they or other members may enter and socialize within the blocks of varying shapes, sizes, and colors. Games on Roblox can be scripted using a sandboxed edition of Lua 5.1 to affect events that occur in-game and create different scenarios. The company's main source of revenue comes from players buying Robux, the main virtual currency in the game, and from players buying "Builders Club" access, a status which gives virtual benefits to users. Players who have created an account may purchase either Builders Club, Turbo Builders Club, or Outrageous Builders Club, otherwise known by users as BC, TBC, and OBC, respectively.

Rift (previously known as Rift: Planes of Telara and as Heroes of Telara before that while still in alpha testing) is a fantasy free-to-play massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by Trion Worlds. Rift takes place within the fantasy world of Telara. The game was released in March 2011.

RF Online, originally named 'Rising Force', (Korean: 라이징 포스) is a 3D MMORPG developed by CCR. The first version of the game was released in South Korea and was later followed by Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, Indonesia, Portuguese and English translations. The North American/European version of the game launched its retail phase on February 21, 2006. A mixture of science fiction and classic fantasy, RF Online is set in a distant planet in the Novus system where magic exists alongside high technology. Like most MMORPGs it follows the typical fantasy setting complete with swords and sorcery, but it also emphasizes the three-way Race vs. Race vs. Race (RvRvR) concept and modern/futuristic technology such as mecha and nuclear weapons.

Regnum Online is a fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by NGD Studios, a game development studio located in Argentina. This game is also known as "Realms Online" in America. The game focuses on full Realm vs Realm team player vs player combat, with a three-way war constantly in progress over forts and castles. There are monsters and an element of grinding, but these are considered secondary to the war.

Red Stone is a 2D massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by L&K Logic Korea.

The Realm Online, originally known simply as The Realm, is a second generation MORPG (multiplayer online role playing game).

Realm of the Mad God is a massively multiplayer online shooter video game created by Wild Shadow Studios (acquired by Kabam in June 2012) and Spry Fox. It was in public beta from January 2010 and the browser version launched on June 20, 2011. On February 20, 2012 the game was made available on the digital distribution platform Steam for Microsoft Windows and OS X.

Ran Online (stylized as RAN Online) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by Min Communications, Inc..

Ragnarok Online 2: Legend of The Second (Korean: 라그나로크 온라인 2 Legend of the Second, Revised: Rageunarokeu Onrain 2 Legend of the Second?), based on the cancelled Ragnarok Online 2: The Gate of the World, is a the MMORPG created by Gravity Corp. of South Korea and is the sequel to the popular MMORPG, Ragnarok Online.

Ragnarok Online (spelled Ragnarök in the logo; Korean: 라그나로크 온라인, alternatively subtitled The Final Destiny of the Gods), often referred to as RO, is a Korean massive multiplayer online role-playing game or MMORPG created by GRAVITY Co., Ltd. based on the manhwa Ragnarok by Lee Myung-jin. It was first released in South Korea on 31 August 2002 for Microsoft Windows and has since been released in many other locales around the world. The game has spawned an animated series, Ragnarok the Animation, and a sequel game, Ragnarok Online 2: Legend of the Second. Player characters exist in a world with a player environment that gradually changes with the passage of time. Major changes in the features and history of the world take place as episodes in the RO timeline. Player characters interact in a 3D environment but are represented by 2D character sprites for front, back, side and diagonal facings. The major types of server-supported gameplay are Player vs Environment, Guild vs Guild, Player vs Player. Also supported by the game server are Group vs Group, Arena Combat, Player vs Monster, Player vs All, and various other specific scenarios at designated instance locations in the game world. NPC-run challenges and contests are also available with prizes, awards, and/or in a specific hall of fame listing.

Puppet Guardian is a Flash-based MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) created by the Japanese game developer, Cold Breath, Co., Ltd.. The game is operated in the United States through a partnership between Policros, LLC and Artifact, Co., Ltd.. Puppet Guardian was officially released out of beta production on October 1, 2007.

Poptropica is an online, role-playing game owned by Family Education Nerwork, owned by interactive-education venture capatalist Sandbox Networks. It was originally owned by Pearson Education, but FEN was acquired by Sandbox in 2015It was primarily the creation of Jeff Kinney, the author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. The site is aimed at children ages 6 to 15. Players can go to different 'islands' (game quest scenarios), compete in multiplayer games, and communicate with each other. The islands all have various difficulties, but all center on a problem that the player must resolve by going through multiple obstacles or completing goals. All islands, upon finishing, award "Poptropica credits" which are non-negotiable but may be used to buy costumes and special effects in the Poptropica store. Guild Wars is a competitive online role-playing game series developed by ArenaNet and published by NCsoft. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn takes place in the fictional land of Eorzea, five years after the events of the original release. At the conclusion of Final Fantasy XIV, the primal dragon Bahamut escapes from its lunar prison to initiate the Seventh Umbral Calamity, an apocalyptic event which destroys much of Eorzea. Through the gods' blessing, the player character escapes the devastation by time traveling five years into the future. As Eorzea recovers and rebuilds, the player must deal with the impending threat of invasion by the Garlean Empire from the north.

Average concurrent users was reported in August 2006 to be around 400,000. The game uses the same engine as Westward Journey II with a distinctively different graphical style. Both games are inspired by the Chinese novel Journey to the West.

Fallen Earth is a free-to-play MMO developed by Reloaded Productions (formerly by North Carolina-based Icarus Studios and Fallen Earth). Elsword (Korean: 엘소드) is a Free to Play, 2.5D action MMORPG developed by the South Korean company KOG Studios. It features real-time action gameplay and includes both player vs. environment and player vs. player modes. There are several playable characters within the game, each with unique backstories and distinct abilities. While playing the game is free, some items and costumes can be purchased through in-game "Item Mall" using real currency.

Empire of Sports is an online multiple-sport MMORPG developed by the French company F4, that advertises itself as the first ever of that style. It was first demo-ed at the Leipzig Games Convention in August 2007 and is currently in a so-called Prologue phase which objectives are similar to a beta testing. It's downloadable and playable for free, although one can already spend money on the title. The release date hasn't been confirmed yet.

Empire & State is a browser-based, free-to-play political strategy MMORPG developed by Novel. Empire & State was released as an open beta in April 2011 and was fully released in November 2011. In addition to being available through Empire & States website, the game became available to play through a game portal at Bigpoint Games in November 2011. Dungeons & Dragons Online (DDO) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by Turbine for Microsoft Windows and OS X. The game was originally marketed as Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach, then renamed Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited upon switching to a hybrid free to play model, and was finally rebranded Dungeons & Dragons Online, with the introduction of Forgotten Realms-related content. Dragonica (Korean: 드래고니카) known in North America as Dragon Saga, is a free-to-play 3D side-scrolling massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by Barunson Interactive. Development has been ongoing since March 2006. Operation of Dragonica is relegated to different publishers for their respective regions. Whilst being free-to-play, the game also includes a cash shop that allows for unique customization of player's characters. It uses a non-targeting combat system ensuring that players have complete control over every single one of their character's movements. Dragon Nest requires users to advance their characters by teaming up and traveling into instanced dungeons.

Dofus is a Flash based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Ankama Games, a French computer game manufacturer. Originally released solely in French, it has since been translated into many other languages. It is primarily a Pay to Play game, though it still offers a limited amount of free content. Its success has led to the marketing of spin-off products, such as books, art, comics and a movie which was planned for release in 2013. It has also led to the development of two continuations: Dofus Arena, released at the beginning of 2006, which is an alternative "tournament" version of Dofus; and Wakfu, a continuation of Dofus. The game has attracted over 10 million players worldwide and is especially well known in France.

Digimon Masters is a free-to-play microtransaction supported massively multiplayer online role-playing game in a setting based on that of the Digimon media franchise, specifically the universe and characters of the fifth anime series, Digimon Data Squad (though many aspects of Digimon Adventure, Digimon Adventure 02, Digimon Tamers, Digimon Frontier and Digimon Fusion are incorporated). The game was first released in South Korea, and an English version was scheduled to be released in December, 2010 by WeMade Entertainment (the company responsible for the English Version of Digimon Battle), but was delayed to 2011. It was announced in July 2011 that Joymax, a subsidiary of WeMade Entertainment would publish the English version of the game. On August 30, 2011 Joymax held a pre-CBT for players, which ended on September 6, 2011. After the conclusion of the pre-CBT Joymax announced on September 22, 2011 that the OBT will held on September 27. The OBT for Digimon Masters concluded on October 11, 2011 with the game going into commercial service on October 20, 2011.

Defiance is a science fiction-themed persistent world massively multiplayer online third-person shooter developed by Trion Worlds. Defiance takes place on a terraformed Earth several decades into the future. It is a tie-in to the Syfy show of the same name. Darkfall Unholy Wars is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by Aventurine SA. It was announced on 18 September and is a sequel to Darkfall. It is a PvP MMORPG where players are encouraged to form clans and battle for dominance across Agon, the fantasy world in which the game takes place.

Drakensang Online is a browser-based, freemium online role-playing game of the German enterprise Bigpoint. The gameplay is similar to the Diablo game franchise and is developed by Bigpoint Berlin. It is one of the few MMORPGs developed in the European Union. The title was in an open beta phase from August 2011 to July 2012. According to Bigpoint's own statement, there are currently 35 million registered accounts. However, the real number can differ because multiple registrations are allowed. A retail version was released in November 2011.

The game combines Arthurian lore, Norse mythology and Irish Celtic legends with a dash of high fantasy. It is set in the period after King Arthur's death and his kingdom has split into three parts which are in a constant state of war with each other. DAoC includes both Player versus Environment (PvE) and Realm versus Realm (RvR) combat.

Crowns of Power, also referred to as CoP, was a 3D fantasy-themed massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that was launched live on August 21, 2008. It was developed by Rampid Interactive and its development can be credited to a team of 5 people made up by Peter Simard, Matt Ensign, Matt Tapply, Bogdan Iliesiu and Chris Bechard. The game was distributed off their main site through a free download, as well as other distributors such as Download.com.

Club Penguin is a massively multiplayer online game (MMO) involving a virtual world containing a range of online games and activities, created by New Horizon Interactive (now known as Disney Canada Inc.). Players use cartoon penguin-avatars and play in a winter-set virtual world. After beta-testing, Club Penguin was made available to the general public on October 24, 2005 and has since expanded into a large online community —growing to the extent that by late 2007, it was claimed that Club Penguin had over 30 million user accounts. As of July 2013, Club Penguin has over 200 million registered user accounts.

Clan Lord is the Macintosh's first massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), made by Delta Tao Software. It was started in the late 1990s and is still going, with a regular update every 3 weeks. In 2001 it was voted one of the top ten Mac games of all time in GAMES Magazine. By the end of 2007, player participation dropped below 100 concurrently online. The game world and characters' options in it grow with each update. The game encourages cooperation and community and has only minimal opportunities for player-vs.-player (PvP) activity. On January 17, 2009, it was announced that Delta Tao would no longer charge monthly fees for play. Since then player numbers have increased from the previous low player base and it maintains a steady stream of online players.

Blade & Soul (Hangul: 블레이드 앤 소울; RR: Beulleideu aen soul) is a Korean fantasy martial-arts massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by NCsoft (Team Bloodlust). On September 13, 2012, NCsoft announced that Blade & Soul would release in Western territories on January 19, 2016. A Japanese animated television adaptation began airing on April 3, 2014 on TBS and other stations.

Black Desert (Korean: 검은사막) is an upcoming sandbox-oriented massively multiplayer online role-playing game by Korean video game developer Pearl Abyss. The game has been in development since 2010, and entered closed beta testing (CBT) in October 2013. The game uses Pearl Abyss' own "Black Desert" engine specifically created to handle the fast rendering required for its seamless world and large-scale castle sieges. Black Desert will be released using "free-to-play" model in Korea, Japan and Russia, although no further details of the business model or revenue generation have been announced, while in Europe and North America the game will use "buy-to-play" model.

Battlestar Galactica is an American science fiction franchise created by Glen A. Larson. The franchise began with the original television series in 1978 and was later followed by a short-run sequel series (Galactica 1980), a line of book adaptations, original novels, comic books, a board game, and video games. A re-imagined version of Battlestar Galactica aired as a two-part, three-hour miniseries developed by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick in 2003. That miniseries led to a weekly television series, which later aired up until 2009. A prequel series, Caprica, aired in 2010. A two-hour pilot for a second spin-off prequel series, Blood & Chrome, aired in 2013 though this did not lead to a series as originally planned.

The game's primary setting is a fantasy-themed alternate history Earth composed of a diverse blend of historical, cultural, allegorical, and mythological elements. The game world is primarily modeled after real-world geography with accessible locations on six of the seven continents as well as the mythical floating continent of Atlantis from which the game's name is derived.

Asheron's Call 2: Fallen Kings is a fantasy MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) for Microsoft Windows-based PCs which was released on November 22, 2002 and shut down on December 30, 2005. In 2012, it was relaunched as a beta for active Asheron's Call subscribers. It is a sequel to 1999's Asheron's Call, although content, graphics and gameplay dynamics differed greatly from its predecessor.

Asheron's Call (AC) is a fantasy MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) for Microsoft Windows-based PCs developed and published by Turbine Entertainment. Ashen Empires, (formerly developed as Dransik, but later upgraded graphics engine and re-branded by TKO Games), is a two-dimensional MMORPG created by Jason "Lothgar" Ely and now owned by Iron Will Games. It was released for a free, open beta in 2002 and later officially released in 2003.

ArcheAge is an MMORPG developed by Korean developer Jake Song (former developer of Lineage) and his development company, XL Games. The game was released in Korea on January 15, 2013, Europe and North America on September 16, 2014, and has also had a closed beta in China. Released in the summer of 2001, the game was the first in the genre to include a science-fiction setting, dynamic quests, instancing, free trials, and in-game advertising. The game's ongoing storyline revolves around the fictional desert planet "Rubi-Ka", the source of a valuable mineral known as "Notum". Players assume the role of a new colonist to Rubi-Ka. With no specific objective to win Anarchy Online, the player advances the game through the improvement of a character's skills over time. After more than 14 years, Anarchy Online has become one of the oldest surviving games in the genre.

The game combines PvP and PvE (a concept the developers call PvPvE) in a fantasy game environment. As of May 20, 2009, Aion had 3.5 million subscribers in Asia. AION's first major expansion pack was released to North America and Europe on September 7, 2010 under the name AION: Assault on Balaurea. On February 29, 2012 AION became free-to-play in Europe with a limited set of options regarding gathering, trade and chat, while North American Truly Free launched on April 11, 2012 with no such restrictions.

Age of Wulin is a 2013 free-to-play 3D martial arts action MMORPG, developed by Chinese developer Suzhou Snail Electronic Co. Ltd. (Snail Games) and published by Webzen in Europe. It was released on 10 April 2013 in North America. Age of Wulin revolves around the Wuxia-inspired lore surrounding martial arts and adventures in medieval China.

Age of Conan: Unchained (formerly known as Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures) is a fantasy-themed Massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed Funcom and published by Eidos Interactive for Microsoft Windows.

AdventureQuest Worlds (often shortened to AQ Worlds or simply AQW) is a browser-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) released by Artix Entertainment in October 2008. Unlike most MMORPGs, AdventureQuest Worlds is developed entirely in Adobe Flash. It currently has over 30 million registered accounts, reaching six million in May 2009 and nine million two months later.

The 4th Coming (abbreviated T4C), and also known in French as La Quatrième Prophétie, is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) released in 1999 by Vircom Interactive for Microsoft Windows. The 4th Coming was later purchased by Dialsoft, which now sells server licenses and continues to develop the game under the unofficial project name of T4C V2.
