Directed by Ted Berman, Richard Rich. With Grant Bardsley, Freddie Jones, Susan Sheridan, Nigel Hawthorne. A young boy and a bunch of misfit friends embark on a quest to find a dark magic item of ultimate power before a diabolical tyrant can.

Another of Disney's animated features, this one is perhaps not as well known and certainly not a classic, but still good entertainment for the young ones or for animation buffs. There are impressive Disney animation and memorable characters, but it just never quite came up to the classic standard of other Disney films. Still and all, however, it is a magic and sword animated film in which a young boy must keep a black cauldron from the hands of an evil Horned King. Classic good guys versus evil.

The best of the Disney animated features were not innocent children's entertainments, but blood-curdling stories of doom and obsession (with a few smiles along the way, of course). They only looked innocent because they were cartoons. Reflect for a moment on the Island of Lost Boys in "Pinocchio," or what happened to Bambi's mother. The great Disney cartoons contained all of the fearsome possibilities of the Grimm fairy tales - or, for that matter, of life itself. Only in recent years have the Disney feature cartoons grown pale and innocuous, as part of the general delusion that harmless means colorless.
