Tabletop Role Playing Games

Via Reddit, I saw this fantastic list at Board Game Geek, detailing the top 100 "gateway" games, which is how we describe a game you use as an infection vector for tabletop gaming.

One of my favorite things to do with friends is to get together for a good tabletop session. While the games that get the most press as "party games" are things like charades, card games, and Monopoly (Monopoly happens to also be the game to play if you're looking to end a few friendships), there are several other awesome tabletop games that can really make a party fun.

Even non-gamers have typically played at least one card or board game at some point in their life, but not everyone's necessarily tried a role-playing game.

The first Dungeons & Dragons game was played back when Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson chose to personalize the massive battles of their fantasy wargames with the exploits of individual heroes. This inspiration became the first fantasy roleplaying game, in which players are characters in an ongoing fantasy story. This new kind of game has become immensely popular over the years, and D&D has grown to include many new ways to vividly experience worlds of heroic fantasy.

Roleplaying games are one of my all time favorite types of tabletop games, and I've played dozens of different games over the years. I like introducing new people to the hobby of roleplaying games and I've found that some games really are better for learning (and teaching) than others.

Just as there really is no such thing as a best book or movie, there is no best roleplaying game, or even best in a particular category. But if you're looking to play something new, this selection of games will help.
