University of South Alabama Health System brings together physicians and faculty of the School of Medicine with health care professionals on the Gulf Coast.

The University of Alabama School of Medicine at UAB, or UAB School of Medicine as it is more commonly known, is a public medical school located in Birmingham, Alabama with branch campuses in Huntsville, Montgomery, and at the University of Alabama College of Community Health Sciences in Tuscaloosa. Residency programs are also located in Selma, Huntsville and Montgomery.

The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) is a private, non-profit osteopathic medical school located on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia (VCOM-Virginia), with two branch campuses located in Spartanburg, South Carolina (VCOM-Carolinas) and Auburn, Alabama (VCOM-Auburn). Founded in 2002, VCOM graduated its first class of 139 students in June 2007.VCOM is one of 30 osteopathic medical schools in the United States, which grant the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, and one of four located in the Appalachian Region. VCOM is fully accredited by the American Osteopathic Association's Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation.

The Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine is a private, not-for-profit medical school for osteopathic medicine located in the city of Dothan in the U.S. state of Alabama. It is the first osteopathic medical school in the state and is believed to be the first osteopathic medical school in the nation established by a regional not-for-profit hospital.

The state of Alabama, aka the Yellowhammer State or the Cotton State, is located in the heart of the “south” and is home to three medical schools.

An osteopathic medical school in Dothan is recruiting students for its first class. Another osteopathic school is planned for Auburn. Together they say they’ll reduce Alabama’s shortage of rural and primary care doctors.

The two newest medical schools in Alabama are osteopathic medical schools with missions to produce primary care doctors for underserved areas. Leaders hope they can help alleviate the doctor shortage in rural counties.
