A genre that uses humor as a critiquing tool, satire is witty writing that draws attention to social issues. These may be focused on individuals in positions of power, social movements or cultural ideals and beliefs that the author believes need to be reexamined.

The Purpose and Method of Satire

It seems to me a contradiction in terms to say, as some have (see, for example, Clark 498-505), that satire need have no moral lesson or didactic purpose, for the essence of satire is aggression or criticism, and criticism (previous to the era of existentialistic nihilism) has always implied a systematic measure of good and bad.
