Flatfish, of the order Pleuronectiformes, have flattened bodies and live on the sea floor. Many are common food fish, with species include sole, halibut and flounder.

A flatfish is a member of the order Pleuronectiformes of ray-finned demersal fishes, also called the Heterosomata, sometimes classified as a suborder of Perciformes. In many species, both eyes lie on one side of the head, one or the other migrating through and around the head during development.

Flatfishes are unique in that the skull is asymmetrical with both eyes on the same side of the head. Flatfish begin life like symmetrical fish, with an eye on each side of the head. A few days after hatching, one eye begins to migrate and soon both eyes are close together on one side. Flatfish spend the rest of their lives on or near the bottom with the eyed side facing up.
